EVALUATION - How effective is the combination of your main
product and ancillary task?
I think my two products link well together as the same dress
sense and colour schemes are used, so a house style is used.
Digipak front cover:
The front cover of the digipak is similar to this shot in
the video as the main character looks trapped between two dark walls with light
at the end of the tunnel. The dress sense is similar and the hairstyle is the
same to keep that continuity throughout the project. Both use stereotypical
conventions of an indie rock band as the album cover shows the band members
together but they are not smiling and the video makes the boy look isolated.
The poster shows the
band members together which is needed in a music poster but even in here the
main character looks unattached from his band mates.
Promotion
To promote a music video, companies will use viral marketing
which means they will use existing sites to feature their video, like on social
networking sites like, Facebook, msn and twitter. Newspapers, television
adverts, billboards and even radio is used to promote music videos.
But mainly music channels are used to show music videos and
the song its self is a main promoter. Promotion of the song is the most
important thing before we can think of promoting the video.
Personal promotion
I have posted both my ancillary tasks and my main product on
Facebook and on my blog so people can view it worldwide. People can also leave
comments so I can receive feedback on where I can improve on my work.
EVALUATION - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our project is a music video which does use some typical conventions, we felt it was important to follow conventions as if our product was totally different to others then it wouldnt fit into our genre of indie rock. We also felt it was important to break conventions to ensure that our product appealled to its audience on the fact that it has never been done before. There is always the chance that the audience wouldnt like the video if it was too different. The best example in a music video for this in my opinion is: Snuff by slipknot, this video inspired us to come up with a twisted tale about broken hearts and depression, the twist at the end of the video was influential in directing our video into a twist at the end. The girl in the video also the "victim" is a blonde haired girl which is a convention used by hitchcock in his movies, it makes the girl seem more vulnerable. We have broken Vladimir Propps theory that each narrative has many different characters but we only have two main characters: the villain and the victim, but we could say that the boy is a victim and a villain. As he is the victim of depression but he brings it on himself while playing the villain.
Tzvetan Todorov's theory that every narrative can be split into five categories is also broken in our video. He believes that it can be split down into EQUILIBRIUM, DISRUPTION, DISEQUILIBRIUM, SOLUTION and finally NEW EQUILIBRIUM. We never really have a balanced story to start with (equilibrium) as the boy rejects the girl in the first sequence. We start with a disequilibrium where the boy is troubled and the girl is rejected, the story never really gets resolved with a solution so our story breaks Todorov's theory. A typical convention we did use was the isolated look through bars, and a shot down an alleyway to make the boy look vulnerable. When editing these shots we had to ensure the boy looked vulnerable as that is how we wanted the audience to see him. We only used fades as transitions to make the video seem realistic as most videos use them instead of using flamboyant transitions as that wouldnt have fit our genre.
We originally planned to use some dialogue half way through our video but we realised it seemed unproffesional and because of our northern english accents it wouldnt fit the song which is clearly American. It would have broken conventions but in my opinion it wouldnt have been positive.

EVALUATION - What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
EVALUATION - How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?
my input to the project
Me and sam both sat and planned out our plot and our storyboard, we then decided to carry on from our prelimenary project. we also mutually decided on the song to use for our video. I was the main character in the video and then we both edited the video, but sam can take most credit for the editing as he really knew what he was doing. i handled the camera on certain shots that i wasnt in.

EVALUATION - What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Open Questionnaire feedback!
From my open questionnaire results I have realized that our music video is good but there is room for improvements. Question one was “what did you think of the acting?” and the majority of the answers said it was very good meaning we wouldn’t have to change any of the shots we’ve done based on unrealistic acting. The second question read: Do you think there was continuity all the way through? Please state why. And every answer said the story was well played out and that nothing changed too dramatically.

The costumes were commented on positively as we looked like a real band. The question where we asked what the video was about created a little confusion as the answers were nearly correct so I think we will have to change the story line a little bit. There was a question: do you think there are other locations we could have used? And the majority said yes and that we should use more landscape shots so we will have to include them in our video. Also a darker place to set the mood was mentioned so we will give that a try. A suggested improvement was one of the shots seemed too cheerful for the plot so we have to film that sequence again.
